Motivational Maps

Motivation Made Visible and Understandable

Encountering my first Motivational Map was a defining moment in my life. From that point on, I knew that no effective leader, organizational developer, or coach could afford to be without the insights from Motivational Maps®. It’s why Motivational Maps® is one of my favorite tools.

What is Motivational Maps®? It is a diagnostic tool—a report and coaching methodology based on an assessment test. It places a simple, easy-to-use system in our hands, allowing us to see at a glance what truly motivates an individual.

It might seem surprising, but for many (especially leaders), money isn't the primary motivator; it's the need for meaning in what they do.

  • Some are driven by development, growth, autonomy, or novelty (Growth).

  • Others are driven by results, expertise, or influence (Achievement).

  • And some are driven by security, human connections, or recognition (Relationship).

The Motivational Map not only identifies these drivers but also reveals how satisfied a person currently is with these factors in their job.

The key benefit—for the individual, their manager, and their colleagues—is that the Map instantly clarifies the right motivational strategy: what does this person need to remain satisfied and energized at work?

Learning the Motivational Maps® method gave me a simple, fast, accurate, and understandable diagnostic toolkit. It allows me to predict, interpret, and solve motivational problems and build committed teams. Finally, here is a simple assessment that, in moments, makes it visible and understandable for anyone...

  • …what motivates someone.

  • …how motivated they are right now, and why.

  • …what the motivational root cause of friction between two people is.

If I had this tool available to me as a CEO, I could have prevented demotivation in so many colleagues.

The Motivational Map provides a simple "user and maintenance guide" to keep employees engaged. Everyone has all 9 motivators present at every moment. The only question is their order of priority, their importance relative to each other, and their current "fill level."

Most people have 3 dominant motivators that define what they seek in their work.
Although all 9 motivators play a role in their lives.

What is the difference between personality tests and Motivational Maps®?

Personality Tests deal with traits and types that are relatively constant and stable. They provide a picture of "Who you are."

Motivational Maps®, however, is a self-assessment method that measures our dynamically changing states and energy levels. It’s a "video" of how enthusiastic and internally motivated an individual is at that specific moment. It answers:

  • "What drives you?"

  • "Why are you currently interested in something?"

  • "What could move you in a better direction?"

People don't go to work energized because of their personality type; they go because they are motivated.
They have that "drive," that inner fire pushing them to do something that matters to them.
